would be great if the reference line would compute averages and dynamically change, ala tableau and microstrategy..

With the August release of Power BI Desktop, we added a new analytics pane that contains lots of dynamic reference line options for you to add to your visuals. To learn more about how it works, check out our latest blog post about the August release. https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-august-feature-summary/

RE: dynamic reference lines

You can actually use a calculated measure in the analytics pane by 1) charting your measure in the chart's values, 2) adding it as a line in the analytics pane (as Min/Max/Average, since Constant accepts only hard-coded numbers), 3) styling it to your liking, and 4) moving the measure to tooltips.

This is however very clunky and almost impossible to discover if you don't know that's possible. Instead, the Analytics pane should let us pick any measure (doesn't need to be in the chart's fields) similarly to how the new expression-based formatting works.

RE: dynamic reference lines

Would be great if you can add a dynamic line based on a measure. I'm working with the horizontal stacked bar chart, displaying a single bar made up of actual sales and projected sales. I want to be able to show the budget as the target, but the only way to achieve this currently is to manually type the budget value in. If I could drag my "Budgets" measure into this, I'd be sorted.

RE: dynamic reference lines

Any update as to whether the addition of a dynamic reference line based on a calculated measure is in the works?

RE: dynamic reference lines

More is needed than just basic summary statistics. Greater flexibility would be provided by allowing the user to set a dynamic reference line based on a calculated measure. Is this in the works?

RE: dynamic reference lines

The update is only available in a few visuals. How about in a stacked column/bar chart where i can show the target value as a line and the pipeline and actual income as a stacked bar/column and that is dynamic and not constant!!

RE: dynamic reference lines

Why is this not available for stacked charts? I want to be able to add a reference line to a bar chart that's split out by legend but have the line change depending on the month filtered. However for a stacked bar chart only input constant is available.

RE: dynamic reference lines

how do i add a dynamic reference line to a bar graph where the reference line refers to targets for each sales person or region and if the filter is used to select that particular sales person or region then the graph should change accordingly. Existing options for reference lines is minimal compared to tableau where I can map the reference lines to a data source containing targets against each category (i.e sales person, region or product line etc etc)

RE: dynamic reference lines

Combined with row level security, this will be extremely useful.
