Python ODBC package pyodbc in Power BI Service

The idea/request here is for the Power BI Product Team to enable the Python ODBC package/library 'pyodbc' in the Power BI Service, to enable SQL Server connectivity for custom Python charts in Power BI Desktop reports published to the Power BI Service. Once the published report is uploaded to the Power BI Service Workspace, and the Python visualisation is viewed, it errors with this message: Script Runtime Error / File "C:\Script\0.py", line 29, in import pyodbc ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pyodbc' The pyodbc package connectivity works perfectly when the Power BI report is viewed locally in Power BI Desktop. However, I have confirmed with the Microsoft Power BI Support Team, who have themselves confirmed with the product team, that this pyodbc download is apparently only for the SQL Server connection to Python, it doesn't currently work for the Power BI.com Service (in the cloud). This explains why the Python charts render perfectly on my local PC, but sadly not when published to the Power BI Service. The support team recommended that we can add this as a 'Power BI idea' for consideration by the Product Team to add it to a future release. I think that this functionality would massively help other developers who would also be interested in using custom Python visualisations in reports published to the Power BI Service.

R/Python Scripting Support for Power BI Report Server based on MS SQL ML Services

It's very needed capability for Power BI Report Server to apply R/Python visuals because of lack of many types of visuals. Very obvious way to implement this capability with Power BI Report Server is through MS SQL Server Machine Learning Services. Power BI Report Server is part of MS SQL Server Enterprise Edition and this platform includes simple and secure way to execute R/Python scripts through its ML component.

The idea of implementation is to apply setting in Power BI Desktop RS and Power BI Report Server portal - connection to MS SQL DB Instance with ML installed. ML Service can be a part of same MS SQL DB Engine as where PBIRS databases are located or it can be different instance of MS SQL DB Engine with ML Service installed. Then user of Power BI Desktop and PBIRS service account will get permission to call procedure sp_execute_external_script to execute scripts.

This T-SQL procedure can be then used as it intended. R/Python visuals can get resulting image as VARBINARY(MAX) from sp_execute_external_script in all modes of report model (import, direct query, live connection). Power Query can pass in and get back processed dataset in import mode through sp_execute_external_script.

    Report Server and Python Visual

Utilizes Python Visuals are important due to the fact that not all problems are solved by using the built-in visuals. Even though the Python Visual is available in the PBI Desktop which is optimized for Report Server, it fails when uploading the report to the Report Server. We need this to go on floating offshore vessels that has intermittent connectivity and thus can not rely on an internet connection. Please provide support for Python Visuals with the Report Server.

R Script in Power BI Report Server

Enable R Script in Power BI Report Server - In the manufacturing environment quality tools are essential, specific S.P.C. (Statistical Process Control). So, for example Quality Control Charts library help us with statistical data analysis in Power BI Desktop, but in Report Services R Script is not enabled. This is an incredible opportunity to delivery assertive information to data customers make their quick decisions based on Power BI RS. In the other post R Visual is not planned, but think fondly in this possibility!

    Power BI On-Prem

We installed Power BI On-prem in our environment. After assessing the application, we figured that users with Power BI Pro license have an option in Power BI Desktop App to "Publish a report to cloud" or "Save as a report to Power BI On-prem report server". Having an option to publish to cloud would defeat the purpose of an On-prem installation. I would recommend having a separate build of "Power BI Desktop App" for On-prem only installation, which does not provide an option to publish report to cloud.

    Power BI Server for SMEs

I understand the reason for Power BI Premium to make it more cost efficient for large organisations. However, in doing so you have totally cut off many many small to medium businesses. Lots of my clients are looking at Power BI and want to be able to collaborate dashboards and reports with a small number of report writers (1-10) and then a small group of consumers (5-100). In addition most of them already have SSRS report so the Power BI Server would be perfect to have a one stop portal for all reporting. The minimum £3000 per month is totally ridiculous for this size of business and is only viable for those with 1000s of users. Seen as the Power BI Portal is just SSRS Portal rebranded then surely if the user already has a SQL licence then there should be a Power BI Server licence included with that or available for the same scale? My suggestion is to have a separate Power BI Server licence or include a scenario in the Premium licence for small user groups of under 100 users to make it cost effective. Just when I thought that Microsoft were finally using business sense and offering a one stop shop for reporting that was more than a match for Tableau and Qlik they go and destory all the god work in one swoop!! Please listen Microsoft and sort this licence cost out for small businesses or risk consigning Power BI to the bin !!!
