Create multiple apps from same workspace infect from same Dataset without replicating the dataset multiple times. only option we have now is to update the app and only one app per workspace can be created which a kind of restrict the workspace usability. If we can create multiple apps share it with different users without creating multiple workspace ... means same dataset no dataset replication, will save the storage as well.

May 2024 update: We are working on creating a separate app as an artifact which will release in the coming months. thank you all for the feedback.
March 2022 update: we plan to have a private preview soon and hopefully release to the public in July

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

We need different apps to be published to different user groups. Right now, this is only possible using multiple workspace. So if this is not going to be developed, Apps are of no use/value for us because a workspace can do the same things (sharing wise) as an app at the moment.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

I agree with many of the comments here that the ability to use a dataset across multiple workspaces does not address this requirement. As stated below, "the whole APP concept is not working out. We need to be able to granularly control who has access to an app and on what level".

The way apps functions now, it's not different than a glorified area for reports and dashboards that are already available to users in the workspace.

Power BI Apps should function as a source to "package" together information for a particular user group within a department, or across multiple departments by adding dashboards and links to other pages.

For example, I'd like to publish an app from a workspace to a group of users who need to access only three of the published reports in that workspace (which contains a few dozen reports) + a link to an MS Form survey + a quick view dashboard that consolidates specific visuals from those three reports. Cases like this also require different Support Sites for different Apps within the same workspace.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

We just recently discovered Apps and this limitation is going to create much more development administration when not ALL users will NOT be using ALL the same reports in a workspace. This will mean that we will need to keep multiple workspaces with mutliple copies of reports. UGHHH!!!!!

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

Would the shared dataset functionality allow for the same report in different workspaces to update both reports when one is updated?

I am creating an app workspace from existing reports in other workspaces, and I do not want to have to update both reports each time to ensure the report is up to date in the app.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

At the noment, the only possibilty to allow our departments to spread different reports to different groups of people is to create a workspace for each usergroup. Different department with different usergroups means a lot of workspaces. Making it possible to publish different apps starting from one workspace would reduce the workspaces to one per department.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

Allowing data set across work spaces may not help. There are situations like we want to restrict certain reports and dashboard to certain set of users/group within App itself. In such situation at this moment we end up creating multiple work space. Essentially, in current situation we're limited object level security within the work space which is basic function to expect. So, please consider multiple App in same work space.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

Need ability either have multiple apps per workspace, or to be able to manage access at a report level when publishing the report to the app.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

The ability to use a dataset across multiple workspaces does not address this requirement. We have a clear need to be able to create multiple apps for a single workspace to meet the needs of our different user groups. Our Executive team don't need to see all the reports from a workspace that the Operational teams need to see. We also don't want to be creating multiple versions of the same report and publishing into different workspaces just to create multiple apps - this is an administration and governance nightmare. Also (raised in a separate idea) we need to be able to create an app with reports from multiple different workspaces so we can tailor the app to the audience, e.g. again for our Executive group.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

We need multiple apps per workspace for organization purposes. After a bit, the app becomes unruly to manage all of the content. Would help with access consumption as well.

RE: Create multiple apps from same workspace

Yes, need the ability to create multiple apps from the same workspace... AND add the ability to show/hide report tabs based on sharing. IMHO, the ability to discover datasets is unrelated.
