I have created a composite model and published it to the service but having issues with other users seeing the data. Here is my current setup:
Workspace A:
PowerBI Dataset A
Workspace B:
Power BI Report A (composite model using the data below)
PowerBI Dataset A
Gateway access to 3 .csv files
Currently my users have view access on Workspace B. With this setup my users cannot see any data. I did some testing and the only way to get my users to be able to see the data in Power BI Report A was to either give them member access to Workspace A or to give them build access to PowerBI Dataset A.
Can we create the ability to keep their access as read only on the dataset.

Thanks - we are investigating to change this before GA of this feature.
Update 4/11/2023: this feature is now GA: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-general-availability-for-composite-models-on-power-bi-datasets-and-analysis-services-models/

RE: Permissions for Composite models in the Service
Giving build access is not workable,. This kills the Composite Model feature.
At least - If a user can see any reports built of different dataset used in composite models, then that user should be able to see the report built using the composite model.
RE: Permissions for Composite models in the Service
The Target of Power BI is to allow different sources (Online, Gateway, file, ... ) and to merge all of these sources.
If a final users having to read all a these data must have "Build" permission (= create report ...) , it's make no sense.
Then the "Consideration - limitations" mentioned into https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-directquery-datasets-azure-analysis-services*considerations-and-limitations__;Iw!!FZtbJVnXfw!ljvOU1993EAZfYsLlFaM3e2Bc0Gk1lif7thkqwJJ47m6WzZK-TNnrpEYAy4W9CWVugA$
"Users need 'Build' permissions on all datasets in the chain to access a report that leverages this feature."
must be solved.
RE: Permissions for Composite models in the Service
Hi,
It will be a major improvement if end-user will not need Build permission on our centralized dataset in order to use local model.
RE: Permissions for Composite models in the Service
There is a limitation that "Users need ‘Build’ permissions on all datasets in the chain to access a report that leverages this feature." for DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services (preview). Can allow "Viewer" permission of underlying dataset to access the composite model report?
RE: Permissions for Composite models in the Service
This is a must-have feature. Without it the composite model feature is not very useful.

Looking forward to this being included in GA of https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform-release-plan/2020wave2/power-bi/direct-query-over-power-bi-azure-analysis-services.
Looks like GA date is not yet set. Or is release date available elsewhere?
