    Only that the columns could be overlapping

    I too want this capability. For many situations the ability to show overlapping columns (and bars) is incredibly useful.
    Ex: My team uses this on SSRS reports where overlapping bars is used for current day output actual vs projected with additional indications for target as well as rolling 7d performance.

    When comparing 2 variables on time series, Column overlap helps to make the chart more readable
