Creating a live connection to SSAS MD or Tabular is working just fine. However, it would be very beneficial to have the ability to create new calculated measures (in MDX). Just like we can create our own calculated measures when writing an MDX query for a SSRS dataset.

The measures are stored in your report definition and sent along with the queries to your model. I too would like to know the progress on measure calculations on top of live SSAS connection? I hope you can knock off 2 birds with 1 stone and add Quick Cals and any other limitations live connection has compared to direct queries and import data options

This functionality is available in Excel and asking our backend data folks to put in extra effort just so it can be served in Power BI makes little sense. We want to democratize the data so we can self-serve. Here is an Example: Our Data folks have provided a field for Units and a field for Average Cost Per Unit but they didn't provide a Cost = Units * Cost Per Unit. What the data folks told us when we said we cant add this calculation in Power BI when we connect live - cannot be quoted on live TV :-)

Any update on this? This is a big piece of the puzzle for this product and a gaping hole in the design. Not sure why we can't get an update or roadmap on this?

Following this post as well! This is a very frustrating problem for me. The ability to write custom calculations and hierarchies on top of a SSAS cube would solve many problems I am facing today.

Hi, we are also waiting for this feature to be available. If Power BI is a meant to be a self-service BI tool, then it should have the possibility to add calculated measures for every source. For enterprises the SSAS tabular models and cubes are often used and already implemented to use directly.

Tableau is winning the fight here at Philips due to the lack of this functionality in power bi. Work arounds are very tedious if they even work. Not all users of a cube wish to see what one department wants to see in a report. Need this asap for olap cubes or Tableau will be our solution.

This Idea is Under Review for a while? Is there any update on it. This was functionality that even ProClarity gave us more than 10 years ago!

Work for a fortune 200 company and we also require quick calcs and custom measures to be created on the fly in Power BI oppose to building in SSAS.
