Creating a live connection to SSAS MD or Tabular is working just fine. However, it would be very beneficial to have the ability to create new calculated measures (in MDX). Just like we can create our own calculated measures when writing an MDX query for a SSRS dataset.

Hi everyone! I'm really excited to announce that you can now create calculated measures on top of a live SSAS connection! The measures are stored in your report definition and sent along with the queries to your model. You can read more information about that here https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/. We're planning support for quick measures in this mode soon, and also looking at expanding this further based on your feedback: - If you want calculated columns/tables you can vote here https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/19140907-create-calculated-columns-when-using-ssas-live-con - If you want support over SSAS Multidimensional, vote here https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/19140997-calculated-measures-when-live-connected-to-mdx-cub Thanks everyone!

Great news! Though would prefer that multidimensional was first as that is my current pain point. On-premise SSAS in MD deployment mode with an established investment in development costs. Client looking for alternative because of the SSAS development costs and time to deliver for new changes.
If Power BI was able to add additional measures would aid in its ability to add value to an ever changing landscape within their organisation.
I know Tabular deployment mode is receiving alot of investment time from Microsoft; thought MD would have been the first given its maturity on-premises with products like Dynamics AX

Will, if you all can pull this off relatively quickly, it will save my company the expense of moving to Tableau.

Great to hear that you've started on this. Power BI together with Tabular models will really be much more flexible after this is in place.

Wow what a timing, infect i'm working Azure Tabular and was in need to create custom measure using DAX. This is perfect. Not sure how long this will take for this feature but I can see the light at end of the tunnel.

Thanks for the update.

RE: Create calculated measures on top of a live SSAS connection

Just learned that a live SSAS MD connection does not allow extra measures nor other data sources? What use is the connection then?
I am trying to do something simple as displaying the last 12 months or last 5 days on axis. Simply isn't possible because:
a) Calculated sets from the MD cube are excluded (so cannot develop in backend)
b) PowerBI doesn't allow me to create a calculated set in the front-end either.

Seeing there has not been any update since a half year.... is this ever going to be included?

For serious enterprise BI solutions (hence using MD), one cannot import data due to shear size of the combined product of tables. One cannot use Tabular due to complexity/size (for example many-to-many)...but it seems you cannot use PowerBI directly either, due to basic functionality missing. Even Excel works with named sets and client side calculations.

You just need to add them in the MDX query on either the 0 or 1 axis depending if it's a set or a measure (and the definition in the with statement if it's not defined in the cube already). Then the majority of issues will be solved.

It's a minor feature, that makes a world of difference.

A huge need. Please implement asap.
Today's we're obliged to ask our IT guy to develop everything in the cube, while we could easily do that directly in PBI.

Tableau Software can do it...
