Power BI desktop is so very very useful, but is undermined a little by the fact that if you use Power BI desktop want to publish multiple reports, you end up with redundant datasets.

In an ideal world:
a) you should be able to publish a dataset from Power BI desktop - without a report. I have done this with a nearly empty report page and then deleted the report.
b) then you should be able to add reports that use that existing dataset. Unfortunately, this can only be done with the online editor at present. It is essential people can travel with this data and Power BI desktop should be able to use an online datasets and reuse it rather than having to reconnect back to the original source e.g. SQL server.

This is also important for a few reasons:
*) this is currently the only way to get a backup of reports
*) offline working - I often write reports while commuting and so can only use Power BI for that
*) this would then allow offline editing using Power BI desktop, but stop the build up of duplicate data sets from happening
*) it would also stop the unnecessary extra storage and redundant SQL queries from being needed

RE: dataset desktop

This would be a great feature and, in my opinion, makes perfect sense. It would remove the logic of a data model out of a report, making it easier to reuse and to maintain. It feels very illogical to me, to have to open one report to change the dataset while working on my other report that makes use of the same dataset.

RE: dataset desktop

Please yes, allow publishing only dataset, the current system is very frustrating

RE: dataset desktop

I used the publish data functionality in Tableau and think it would definitely be valuable with Power BI.

I like how Tableau gives different options such as:

1. Publish dataset separately
2. Publish dataset and connect report to data on the server

RE: dataset desktop

At my business we created a master template in desktop which has all our data joins thats are most common, we then publish this. See possible solutions to A & B below:

A) Then via the desktop, select "Get Data" & search "Power Bi Datasets". You can then select that master template and avoid creating a new dataset per report.

B) Then i believe if you are online you can also save a copy of the template and start a new report of the same dataset.

RE: dataset desktop

I would suggest doing like Access. Have a Split button that enables splitting the pbix file in to front end and back end.

RE: dataset desktop

Users should be able to publish just Dataset using Power BI Desktop. Actually it should ask User

1. 'Publish DataSet' (Only Publish Data Set)
2. 'Publish Report' (Publish Report with Data Set)

RE: dataset desktop

I have 3 datasets that have a few common dimensions. I would like if I could merge or join the datasets so that for example the date dimension would work for measures from all datasets.
