The timeline slicer (Custom Visualization) functions, but it is not a friendly tool. If I quickly want to select a "Start" and "End" date for a date range, it would be more helpful to have a popup calendar with an optional freeform text box for both the "Start" and "End" date ranges.

I'm very pleased to say we've shipped a much improved date slicer in the October release of PBI Desktop. More details are available here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-october-feature-summary/#reportView Let us know what you think and please keep those suggestions coming! thanks!

RE: Better Date Range filters

Also please give a property to select default range of selection based on one date selection like say if i have selected 1 date 06/30/2016 then i need to last 6 months data like the data range start from 01/01/2016

Agreed, please extend the functionality and design of the timeline slicer, and make it available by default. Right now it is too big for me to use, I can only use it if it takes up about 1/3rd of the total report page size, like you see in the example you can download in the visuals gallery. I also dislike the behaviour that when you drill to another level (Y-Q-M-W-D) the visual needs more vertical space.

RE: Better Date Range filters

I agree that the Slicers need improvement but I am not sure if everyone is aware, but the popup calendar and Excel like date filtration is already a default capability in the Filter panel. It took our team a little while to realize that we had to specifically put fields into the Page or the Report Level Filters section in design mode. The Basic filter is not great, but if you change it to Advanced feature in design mode & then publish, the Advanced filter is default for the report user.

RE: Better Date Range filters

Agree very much on the fact that the current slicer takes up WAY too much space and need a quick calendar pick option. Managers would rather pick dates on a calendar than try and pick the granularity and click and drag to get the dates they want. As for the look, why not just mimic the timeline slicer in Excel? Looks a lot sharper and it doesn't stack the Month, Year, Quarter which results in needing more space to display the slicer the more granularity you need.

RE: Better Date Range filters

A clear function in the timeline slicer would be nice as well

RE: Better Date Range filters

I would much rather have a date picker than the timeline slicer. The timeline slicer takes too much space and is clunky/unattractive (in my opinion).

Hi, has there been any update on this feature? it's quite critical to provide the non-technical end users with user friendly date filters to keep engagement with the tool/ dashboards.

I think this is a duplicate of a higher Voted "idea" .... see here:

If all of these votes are added to this item it will be #1 in idea list... I think these ideas are very similar.

RE: Better Date Range filters

The time selector on Salesforce Wave's visualization tool is way far ahead of those available in Power BI. I, too, find the "timeline slicer" far too bulky to be useful in a report - and it doesn't appear to work with a SSAS OLAP cube, either. Something thin, streamlined, and user-friendly that works with both regular date data as well as with date hierarchies from an OLAP cube would be great.

RE: Better Date Range filters

Couldn't agree more about current slicer from the comments below. Its super bulky and takes up half of the report just to use. Would be nice if PowerBi in general handled dates much better. Like on charts you can filter by "Last X Month", "Last Month", "Last Year", "This Year" etc with all the defined filter features, and dynamically updates as time moves. Countless times i want to make a report that compares this month numbers to last years month, and it becomes a very painful task.
