Please add text boxes to this list. The header "handle" gets in the way when placing objects in the top/header of a report page wasting space at the top of the page.

Microsoft has always had general design standards for all products. As a visual design tool, Power BI should conform to these standards and support expected behaviors such as using the mouse to draw a marquee box to group-select objects, group object alignment and group snap to grid. If you were to put a group of experienced Word, Excel and PowerPoint users in a room and ask them to give feedback on their experience with Power BI report design, they would provide a list of such behaviors.

At the moment we don’t have any plans to implement this. It sounds like it’s mostly useful for learning/training? If there are other ‘production’ scenarios that you think it’d be useful, where a regular table/matrix wouldn’t work, please let us know in the comments!

    Paul Turley commented  ·

I get the idea but how is this different from adding another table to the model, with or without relationships to other tables?

From the comments and scenarios everyone’s describing, the problem is really that you need a way to allow end-users to change which measure is displayed in a visual on the fly.

As a few folks have mentioned, the FORMAT function might help in the interim, as long as you’re showing the results in text rather than a chart. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dax/format-function-dax has details on how to use that.

The expression-based formatting feature that we’ve started work on may help to a certain extent, but that’s really designed to change a visual’s properties rather than the data type or format. We’ll look into extending that work to support this scenario as well.

We’re moving this to Backlog status – our core plan is to build ways that end-users can change the dimensions or measures that are visible in a chart on the fly. They’ll be able to explore much more freely rather than…

    Paul Turley commented  ·

I've encountered this as well. I klugy work around is to return a formatted string for the measure. Not an ideal solution, I admit.

Hi everyone! To give you an update here, we’ve begun work on this feature!

The first step will be bringing icon sets as a conditional formatting option. You’ll be able to set rules and icons, very similar to what you can do in Excel today. We want to get this out to you quickly, so it’ll be available in table and matrix visuals only to begin with.

Based on the comments on this thread, we’re focusing on the indicators first and looking for feedback on how soon after we need to follow with model-based KPIs. Please keep letting us know in the comments if you need model support for this too!

Thanks for your patience and for engaging and voting!

See: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/16939561-kpi-icon-sets-for-use-in-table-and-matrix-visualiz. Please give us KPIs. We have them in Power Pivot, SSAS Tabular and they've been in SSAS MD for many years. Why not in Power BI?

    Paul Turley commented  ·

Yes, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE at the very least give us the same capability we've had in SSAS for over a decade. KPI definitions are lightweight but present in Power Pivot and SSAS Tabular. Seems like an easy add for Power BI.

The KPI feature has been a standard in SSAS and Excel for many years. I was surprised that it wasn't part of Power BI from the beginning. I'd also like to have the option to calculate the Status and Trend properties separately, like we can in SSAS but just tie them to a hidden measure (e.g -1, 0, 1)

Will, I think it's important to acknowledge that this is a feature request that would be a game-changer for enterprise deployments and adoption, but will likely not get votes from novice or self-service-only users. Please consider that when ranking and prioritizing feature requests.

Provide the option to tie the KPI status to a measure so I can calculate the status, like we do in SSAS multidimensional. While you're at it, please add a Trend property. This standard was established many years ago. Why not just do that same thing and keep KPIs as flexible as they have been for over a decade?

I think there are a few other ideas suggesting various scorecard functionality. In particular I'm looking for this: A repeating container for visuals would unlock some amazing opportunities to extend visuals. In Tableau, I can create a scorecard by adding a bar, sparkline and KPI indicator to a repeating table. I can also do this in SSRS by placing visual report items in a table or matrix but I can't do this in Power BI.

I frequently need to match key-pair values to create relationships on long text values, such as a street address line. Having the ability to derive an efficient unique integer value from a string would improve model storage and performance.
