The relative date slicer (a Preview feature as of June ‘17) gets us close to this with the ’This Month’ or ‘This Year’ settings. That is a dynamic date selection that updates based on the current system date. We plan to add a ‘YTD’/‘MTD’ option to specifically select a range from the start of the month/year up to today, hopefully that’ll address the remaining requirements!

Thanks for the suggestion! We’ll consider it along with the others here and prioritize it based on the votes. If you want to help raise the priority, keep voting!

Hey all!
We’ve continued to make progress here, so I wanted to update this thread with our current capabilities for maintaining security on dashboards/reports.
As always, all of this information can be found in our Row-Level Security (RLS)documentation: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-admin-rls/
> If you have set up RLS in Analysis Services, Power BI will send the signed-in user’s credentials to Analysis Services, and respect the RLS rules set up on the on-premises model.
> Separately, you can set up RLS in Power BI for data sources that you import or connect to via DirectQuery. This process starts in PBI Desktop, where you define roles, and write DAX to constrain what data these roles can see. As part of this process, can you use the UserPrincipalName() DAX function to get the current signed in user’s UPN (e.g. joe@contoso.com). Then, once you publish to service, you can assign users to these…

Agreed - we are also looking at RLS and through desktop, definately slows things down. There needs to be better ways to link back to DB.

Great suggestion! There’s minimal control over this today and we’d like to improve this. If you need real-time updates today, you can take a look at the Developer APIs for pushing data directly into Power BI datasets. Adding your vote will help us prioritize this functionality!

We are considering this for a future release of Power BI Desktop. Keep voting and we’ll update this item as we make progress.

Also agree - this is the one thing preventing me from really recommending we move to PowerBI....I need to have better way to share EDW models with end users, using common business language with pre-set available items....not requiring data modeling and them to design commonly used aggregates. Not to mention all the things others have said.
