Currently, all custom connectors (even certified ones) are delivered in either mez or pqx files. Renaming them as zip files, you can easily open them and check for the code. I's a good way to learn language m and custom connector design, but it's not copy protected in any way.
In case the Power BI team wants to enable people selling their custom connectors, you will want to give them some peace of mind that noone can actually copy your source code.
