This would have a major impact on organisation old Oracle Essbase envs.

We're glad to let you know that the Essbase connector is now Generally Available in Power BI. Please refer to the April release announcement for more details: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-april-2019-feature-summary/ Thanks for your feedback.

RE: PowerBI connector for Oracle Essbase

The root issue is probably the configuration of the Hyperion XMLA web Service.

When PowerBI makes the DISCOVER_DATASOURCES XMLA SOAP request, one of the elements returned is the "DataSourceInfo" property that PowerBI supplies for all subsequent SOAP Discover / Execute requests.

If the DataSourceInfo value could be overridden within the connection screens in PowerBI it would resolve this issue. This is how the SQL Reporting Services Essbase connection works - i.e. allowing the connection string to be manually detailed, not solely relying on (potentially incorrect) settings configured in the Hyperion XMLA server.

We have the same issue, but for a workaround we can use Fiddler (an HTTP proxy) to rewrite the DISCOVER_DATASOURCES response to update the DataSourceInfo to include the name of the server running Essbase Agent. This means we are able to connect and run Essbase queries.

This is the incorrect row element returned from the XMLA Web Service:

[Servername of Hyperion Server here]
Essbase OLAP Server on [Servername of Hyperion Server here] machine
Provider=Essbase;Data Source=[Servername of Hyperion Server here]

Essbase XML for Analysis

Authenticated

Everywhere it contains [Servername of Hyperion Server here] it should actually return the name of the Essbase Agent Server.

Hope this helps.

RE: PowerBI connector for Oracle Essbase

Our clustered environment has the same issue. I tested connecting to a single-server environment (non-production environment) and was able to connect to Essbase there, so there seems to be an issue with clustered environments.

RE: PowerBI connector for Oracle Essbase

Cannot get Power BI to give Essbase application list. I'm using the following string to connect: https://financialreporting-dev.app.vumc.org/workspace/xmla. Created Provider Server in EAS as well. Only get the provider server and an OAC folder after connecting. No applications.
