Currently each Power BI report published to the Report Server has its own data source embedded within the report. Any change in the source would require us to change hundreds of published reports individually. Could we have a shared data source/connection similar to SSRS Reports that would help us manage deployment and changes much more efficiently.

We're not planning to make this feature available in Power BI Report Server. We are looking at making available an API to allow you to change the data source programatically, however, to make movement between servers easier.

SSRS already supports Shared Data Sources (and has done for a long time), it would be good if PBIRS could either use the existing SSRS Data Sources, or have an equivalent for PowerBI. Having the data source embedded within each PBI report is not ideal, as others have commented.

Not having a shared data source is breaking our deployment model based on SSRS. We are typically able to set up the same data source on dev and production and then copy the report from dev to prod without changes by the admin. Now we have to open the report with designer and modify it since we cannot even change the server name through the report manager web interface. Hope to see this soon. Thanks!

Here is a cross post as this issue has been raised in other forum as well https://feedback.azure.com/forums/556165-azure-analysis-services/suggestions/17173610-built-in-ssrs-support-for-azure-as
This a big roll-out blocker for Power BI Report Server paginated reports which cannot not connect to Azure AS. Having Power Query connectors as shared data sources in Power BI Reports server would be a dream !

This is a must in my opinion, for house keeping and trouble shooting.
I am surprised that it has not been done yet.

This is a basic requirement for us, and is blocking migration to PowerBI

Having shared datasources for SSRS has made our over a thousand reports manageable so yes indeed we would like to be able to share any power bi data source the same way

This is one of the two reasons currently stopped us to deploy power bi report service.
