Vote on this idea if you want expand/collapse on column headers in the matrix similar to what was shipped for row headers in November (https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-november-2018-feature-summary/#expandCollapse).

10/20/2022 - Just an update, this is an extremely expensive item, which is why it has not been picked up yet. I promise we will revisit this after we ship visual calculations

Being able to collapse heading will allow for looking at 2 distant columns next to each other.

Exactly! The idea is that this feature is available for both rows and columns. It will help a lot in analyzing the information.

Yes, absolutely needed for showing Year -> Quarter -> Month.

yes, would be great if we would have an availability to decide e.g. which measure should be detailed across months, and which just need yearly summary. Would be also great to have a decision whether column subtotal is shown on left or right side of detailed view, similarly to row top/bottom option

Column headers are very useful to expand, I get requests all the time for Fiscal Year or Calendar Year with the option to expand out to the 12 months of a given year, then collapse it and move to the next year over, expand that out, etc...
