    In May 2017 Power BI Desktop started supporting creation of DAX measures when working in live connect mode to an external SSAS model: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/


    Vote on this idea if you want support for calculated measures against multidimensional models too.

    Also Waiting for Multidimensional!! please update on status I know industry thinks multidimensional cubes are old news but multidimensional cubes need love too!

    YES! And I should also add as another user did that this is needed in Power BI Report Server and the associated Desktop RS, since everything seems to be separate at this point. I just hit this shortcoming this week, especially with wanting to do running totals and other custom measures.

    Would be a great addition. Most reports we have are against cubes - and the need to deploy cube changes everytime a measure for a specific report has to be added is not very effiecient.

    Fully agree with the comments below, e.g. of August 30, 11 and 9. I would also appreciate to see some feedback (announcement) from Microsoft. They made a promise when they acquired DataZen, didn't they?

    'Agreed. The ability to expose the base modelling features in PowerBI when connected to a live SSAS MD or tabular data source, are exactly what my current client need. Specifically:
    - grouping / binning
    - query multiple data sources
    - add calculated members

    My organization also greatly needs this feature. We regularly use live connections to our multidimensional models. But can't feature any measures not embedded within the cubes. This is unacceptable, as it forces us to embed specific report calculations into our cubes incurring dev and deployment overhead, with very little reuse for the cube-embedded report-specific calculations.
