Connect to SAP BW with single-sign-on via on-premise gateway

Large SAP BW installations with thousands of users are often accessed via single-sign-on (SSO) e.g. the users windows credentials are used to authenticate to BW. SSO simplifies the user experience and reduces user administration costs. These users should be able to setup on-premise gateway connections that can be used to refresh data sets in the Power BI Service. The connections should leverage that individuals BW roles & authorizations and not require a BW password i.e. automatically associate the Power BI user ID to the associated SAP user ID.

RE: Connect to SAP BW with SSO

We need this in our organization as we have to leverage existing BW roles and authorizations instead of controlling the access at the report or a work space level.
Because of this missing SSO we are unable to use the power BI .

If this is possible, we will increase Power BI usage dramatically.

RE: Connect to SAP BW with SSO

This is probably the single biggest barrier to further adoption and users in our company.

RE: Connect to SAP BW with SSO

Connecting to BW via Direct Query in very large BW systems has some advantages but many disadvantages, including slowness and loss of many Power BI key features such as data mashup and transformations. As such, we do not recommend this option in our environment. With Import we can bring transparently the set of data the users need closer to them and allow them to mashup (adding local groupings and hierarchies) and add useful transformations that allows fixing wrong data, adjusting formats etc. However, the Import method does not have Cloud refresh, forcing users to refresh at desktop level and re-publish the whole set again and again. The new BW connector added spedd and mass processing capabilities, which is great. However, without the option to refresh Imported data in the cloud we still have no viable BW connection option to recommend to our users.

We are running HANA on top of BW and RLS is established at the BW layer. We need the above stated issue to be resolved in order for RLS to work properly...

RE: Connect to SAP BW with SSO

In our organisation we are using BW and the only way allowed to authenticate is SSO, which makes it impossible to use BW from PBI Cloud without possibility to pass credentials through the gateway.

This is needed to help ensure data access is managed.
