BI in SQL vNext

What should we add to the BI capabilities in the next version of the SQL boxed product

  2. Partitions generate

When you have to design multiple partitions it's a good idea to have a partition generator that can create multipe partitions in you project in Vusial Studio.

Like you provide a pattern SELECT * FROM FactTable Where PartitionValue = {0} and then {0} is enumerated through the all months of several years, or through whatever partition strategy is.

  3. Change the browsing of a cube to be more like the OWC from SQL 2008 and prior.

Being able to drag and drop members on to the rows and columns, as well as filters and sub-cube filters was so much more useful when checking the validity of a cube I just built.

  4. An adhoc cube browser tool

While all the PowerView dashboarding capabilities are very nice and highly used, majority of our customers are analysts who'd like to be able to browse through a cube to perform ad-hoc analysis. A need for an ad-hoc cube browser tool is very strongly felt in such cases. A parallel would be tools like ProClarity (while it was still available),Cognos Analysis Studio and even SQL Management Studio! We can't deploy Management Studio across all work machines for Business Analysts and no, Excel is not the best cube browser out there. Please provide a finer version of an ad-hoc cube browser so…

  5. Improved support for SSAS Failover Clustered Instances

Provide the same support for SSAS Failover Clustered Instances (FCIs) as for the relational engine. This means support for SMBv3 and Clustered Shared Volumes (CSVs). This would enable a more consitent architecture for larger clusters which hosts relational als well as SSAS FCIs.

  6. Attribute-based (Column-Based) Security for SSAS (OLAP)

It would be handy to secure attributes in SSAS OLAP in a way that confidential attributes are only shown to a specific user group.
Example: if you take customer-dimension in Adventure-Works attribute "birth date". (out of simplification) all user should be able to see all customers but only some users should be able to "see" birth-date. An allowed User should be able to show "birth date" as a propertie of costumer. if a restricted user opens the same report attribute "birth date" shouldn't be shown at all but still all other customer-related informations.

  7. Add a logical folder for dimensions

To add a logical folder for dimensions. For example, we have many date role-playing dimensions

  8. Better interface for perspectives

In Visual Studio (BI/SSAS/OLAP Cube). When you have a lot of attributes and mesures in perspectives, it is hard to find any specific attribute. Right now you cannot even sort them much less to filter or find by name. Some better interface is needed to nevicate throught items in perspectives.

Additionally, when you add a new item (measure, attribute, etc.) the option is warranted that these are by default are checked (included) into certain perspectives. Otherwise one has to watch that item in visible through perspective.

  9. Improve the performance of SSAS

In SSAS FE is always a bottle neck, hope we can make FE to support multi-thread.

And improve MDX Rank function to dynamically work with more than one dimensions.

  10. Combine Multidimensional and Tabular SSAS

Integrate both Tabular and Multidimensional into a true semantic layer and allow mixing of both forms of SSAS. Allow developers to utilise either MDX or DAX.

  11. Ability to annotate reports

Add a capability so that annotations can be added to reports. So that explanations of numbers can be attached to reports. An example might be looking at a report and seeing one number that is particularly low and adding a note that explains this was because that division was closed/flooded/struck by ligtening.

  12. Better SSRS / SSAS (OLAP) integration

A SSRS grid control (possibly with a pre-specified number of columns) that sources data from SSAS OLAP, is aggregate-aware and can accept mostly any MDX queries thrown at it (without any result set flattening).

  15. In SSAS OLAP, "soft" attribute relationships

A way to relate dimension attributes simply for the purpose of accessing what used to be called member properties, rather than defining aggregation paths

  17. Support of in-memory optimized tables for MS AS MD cell writeback scenarios

Right now MS AS issues a table lock and that is not compatible with the in-memory optimized tables

  18. Migration support to Tabular models

Add a migration support to Tabular models to reduce the migration efforts. The migration path should only cover the elements which are similiar in both models. Maybe leverage the already existing BSIM layer to reverse engineer it.

  19. Improve the execution of the RANK () function in BISM MD

This function has not been optimized in any release and is useless. If it was working it iwould be extremely important.

  20. Deprecate multi dimensional model

As sad as it is, there needs to be focus on one way forward - that appears to be tabular. A migration path is needed, but having the two models is confusing and becoming unnecessary.
Even if full support for MD features is not available I think this should still happen.
