Power BI Ideas

How can we improve Power BI?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. When we add Custom Column, allow us to choose its position

When we add a new column in the Query Editor, it always places the column at the end. This makes it difficult to visualy relate the new column with the other columns that were used in the calculation, and make if difficult to debug our custom column code. The workaround to use ordering after we add the column, is not user friendly if we have dozens of columns.

It would be helpful, if we can choose the location of the column from the UI (with a default), and that you add a fourth optional parameter in Table.AddColumn for the column…

    • macros

Build a macro recorder similar to Excel in the powerbi desktop. If could run through selections and paste out graphs. This would save time on custom selections every month.

      • Increase Export Data Limits

In late 2016, Power BI improved our export data options to allow exporting up to 150,000 rows to Excel from a visual on a Power BI dashboard for Pro users. If you require higher limits, please vote on this idea. If you have more specific requirements, please leave them in the comments.

        • Power Query functions in URL using a web data source under on-premise data gateway

Add the ability to use Power Query functions in the source string not only for the PowerBI Desktop, but also to on-premise data gate
Now It's not supported to type Power Query functions as web URL when we create a web data source under on-premise data gateway

          • Add hour, quarter of the hour and minute to the date hierarchy

The title really says it all, and there are some similar suggestions.
But to be specific, Power BI should really be able to support hour, quarter of the hour, and even minutes in the already existing Date Hierarchy (Year, Quarter, Month, Day). Of course, Week of the year should be an available option as well.

            • Subscribe to email snapshots of *entire reports*

Extend the email subscriptions feature (currently in public preview) to enable subscribing to emails of entire reports, as opposed to individual report pages.

Further information about the current feature can be found here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/introducing-email-subscriptions-in-power-bi-stay-informed-when-it-matters/

                • When Power BI is embedded into SharePoint, allow filters to be preset

It is currently possible for filters (or even slicers) to be preset when publishing to PowerBI.com. From a threat on the recent PBI AMA it was stated that Power BI will be able to be embedded in SharePoint. When that happens, it would be great to be able to preset filters for each embedded dashboard/report rather than needing to set it in the Power BI pbix file first. This way it would allow multiple instances of the dashboard/report to be embedded and filters set for the specific SharePoint embed locations. The use case for this could be a sales situation…

                  • Custom Territory for Power BI Map.

It should be possible to create a custom territory in Power BI. Not every Organization uses Continent, Country, State & Province or County for Mapping. Some Organizations want to create customer sales territories which is hugely valuable in getting granular into your Data.

Currently this feature is available in Tableau.
                    http://powertoolsfortableau.com/tools/drawing-tool

This will also eliminate the use of Location Intelligence software as a counterpart when analyzing data.

                    • Power BI Embedded Parallel Query Submission

Allow developers to specify how many concurrent queries should be submitted by a single Power BI Embedded report.

Backgrround: If a report relies on several independent direct queries, the Power BI Embedded server throttles their submission to the data source. This prevents the report from using the full power of the data source.

                          • export to PowerPoint via the power BI desktop only

I work in a big insurance company and due to security reasons, we can't upload anything to the cloud / the power BI web services.
However, we love and use the Power Bi desktop to create beautiful internal reports. but we need to share them internally with slides.
we need a way to export reports directly from the power BI desktop to PowerPoint (without publishing the report to the web)

This is a must have feature for all the analysts in my team and will love to have your support on that.

                            • Redshift Connector in Power BI Service and Data Gateway

Redshift Connector in Power BI Service and Data Gateway really needs to be available soon. Although the release in July enabled Redshift as a Data Source in Power BI Desktop, there is still no update on when this will work in Power BI Service. We now have a strong need to allow for this connection to work in Power BI Service. This must work in Direct Query mode. In addition we should be able to Import Data into the Model and use Data Gateway to Refresh in Power BI Service. That way we can take advantage of the DAX functionality. …

                              • Support refresh from the web when running code/script (Power Query, SQL, R...) from a text file

When you deploy multiple dashboards that use the same script/code (whether it data transformation in Power Query (M), a SQL statement or an R code), it is efficient to put one code in a text file, and query against the file, rather then copy/pasting the code every time you make a change.

Here is an example of a workaround: https://blog.crossjoin.co.uk/2014/02/04/loading-power-query-m-code-from-text-files/

The problem is that now you can't schedule a refresh from the web: Power BI throws an error
"You can't schedule refresh for this dataset because one or more sources currently don't support refresh."

Can you make such approach acceptable…

                                  • Add Legend on Table View and Matrix View

Allow adding legend to table view and matrix view. The legend could be a dimension, calculated columns, or a measure. For dimensions and calculated columns, allow discrete colors. For measures, allow gradient colors.

                                    • Improve Querying performance to SQL Sever Analysis Services with large data

Especially Tabular Models with large volume suffer from the quality of MDX generated by PowerQuery component. For example, the same queries made in Excel Pivottable are most of the time faster with a better MDX generation. Also, why not querying tabular models with DAX ! previewing queries with a subset are very slow in case of use of high cardinality attributes

                                      • Enable mobile layout for Power BI Embedded

Right now we can create custom layouts of the report for users to view when they are on their phones, but it works for the Power BI mobile app only. However, as we are using Power BI Embedded heavily, we would love to see this feature to extend beyond the Power BI mobile app to Power BI Embedded, e.g. display phone layouts when user is using mobile devices to access the Power BI Embedded report.

                                        • Date Format Problem with Streaming Data Set

Having a pbi streaming data set (with history) with a column of type datetime (filled by a stream analytics output). Power BI Portal Language is set to "German". But display in pbi report table is still in format: mm/dd/yyyy. What I need is: dd/mm/yyyy. I don't see any possiblity get the desired date format based on a streaming dataset? (Content in the colum of the datetime looks like: "2016-12-05T16:27:27.926Z")

To be able to set a locale in a Report or Dashboard like in SSRS would be handy but any other solution to the described problem is very welcome!
