Default Selected Slicer or Tile-By Value Configuration
Allow a user to set the default value for a slicer or tile-by value on a page/dashboard, so that when the Power View page is opened for the first time, the default value is selected.
eg. If the page has a slicer for Year or Month, allow the user to configure the most recent Year or Month to be selected by default.
We’re looking into this request, thanks for everyone’s votes and comments.
It looks like many of the requests will be addressed by the new ‘Sticky filters’ capability. Now when you log out of Power BI and come back to a report, the same items will be selected as when you left.
For those who’re looking to have a ‘last month’ selection, the relative date slicer might help.
Those with comments about currencies where having multiple selected makes the report meaningless – the report will load with whatever selection the author saved, so if you save it with one currency selected your users will see that by default.
If there are scenarios that these features don’t address, please let us know in your comments – if you are really specific it’ll help us build the feature to work just the way you want!
absolutely needed this !!!

Absolutely need this - i need to default to the most recent date ( not necessisarily today()) but allow selection of another date in the past via dropdown, not relative date. When an auditor comes, they want to see what happened on a specific date, not 37 days ago.

Please add the feature to select a default date on the slicers.
it wont let me vote... please implement this ...
thanks a million

This is such a no brainer feature. Hard to believe they haven't already created it.
This feature is very helpful as it gives default date selection when power bi report opens first time on the service and if user want he can change this setting too on the report itself.
Its very important feature..!

I have been developing SSRS reports for many years now and each parameter has an available values AND default values selection. The most common use case is for time period selection e.g month. Every time the user runs the report the latest months data is automatically displayed. Yes you can do this in Power BI with the realtive date slicer BUT what if your fact table for whatever reason has the latest month that is not the current month and cannot be determined by Last x in the relative date slicer. In SSRS it was easy: SELECT MAX(DateKey) from FactPleaseAddThisSoon.
Also even though you might be able to use the Relative date slicer, what if you want to have a drop down or list slicer.
I have also tried the well documented flagging the current month but its not very nice having a slicer thart reads Jan Feb Cur April May....
Please nice Power BI people, its been three Christmases now and we still have not received this present!
I have a date slicer where I can choose a date range. Basically, I need to set "TODAY" as default finish date, but still being able to select other dates.
Sticky filter selections were added nearly a year ago. If you set the slicer to 180 days and publish, will this set the default for your users?
As already mentioned, for lists and drop downs, there are two big issues at the moment:
1) If single select is enabled then you should not be able to unselect your item and have it show All. The slicer should force the user to select a different item.
2) For default values, sticky filters is not a solution as due to RLS different users may have different selection options. One possible and seemingly easy solution would be to have a 'default to first/last' option.
I am loathe to start a new idea when this is officially under review, so I hop these quick wins will be taken on board.
Has there been any movement on this? We really need the ability to programmatically set the default value for our date based slicer.
This idea was submitted Apr 26, 2017. Approaching two years and no response from Microsoft.
I would need something that says most recent fiscal period or week, not standard calendar
This is a feature we need for sure.

I think what we are basically looking for is for the same functionality that we have in a single select parameter in an SSRS report.

We really need this!
the issue with the current slicer is that if you untick the selection it defaults to all, even if single selection is enabled. We need an option which forces the slicer to be something even if it just defaults to the first value it finds.

Yes! very good!

This is essential for any orgs using row-level security and any sort of slicers. Pretty inelegant for users to initially log into a report with blank data, then having to user the slicer to unlock what they have permissions to see.
