  1. Service tags for NSG

    Idea: Service Tags for PowerBI.

Issue: PowerBI Data Gateway is installed on Azure Server OutBound Security Rule needs to be setup on Server every time new server is set up creating manual work, for setting up outbound ports and IP address. Also Microsoft Azure Datacenter IP list is updated weekly which increases maintenance of updating IP address.

Solution/Request: Microsoft Provides PowerBI Service Tag which includes all Ports/IP(updated weekly) so that Outbound security rule can be setup in one place and no maintenance is required for weekly update of IP address.

  2. Refresh data upon change to the report

When the pbix file is updated (published via Get Data) or whenever a new pbix overwrites a current report, the dataset should be refreshed.

What happens currently is that the report may be weeks out of data when republished, and this old data replaces current data on apps (even without republishing). Instead, the dataset should always be refreshed when the pbix source changes.

  3. GMSA Account for Enterprise Gateway

When setting up an Entreprise Gateway on PowerBI.com, in the manage gateways, data source setting page.

If I use Windows Authentication, I cannot put a GMSA (Group Managed Service Account) because the password field is required. GMSA account password are generated and maintained by the Key Distribution Service (KDS).

I would like to be able to use this type of account to configure Enterprise Gateway.

  4. Gateway Management tool - CLI?

It is cumbersome to manage an Enterprise Gateway for 1000+ users using only the web gui. An ideal tool would be:
    1) fast to return and submit information - no waiting for the web gui to load.
    2) allow an admin to quickly add data sources & users, both one at a time and in bulk (perhaps by calling a function that takes a .csv of data as an input)
    3) allow an admin to audit datasources, e.g.: view encrypted credentials; see how many datasets are connected; see how often refreshes are run, and whether they're succesful; return the M…

  5. OAuth to be made available for Enterprise Gateway

We are using Organizational account for connecting to OData feed in Power BI desktop. However, In Power BI service - OAuth authentication(which is required for Organization account) for adding the data source to Enterprise gateway is not yet available.
The only workaround for adding such data sources is to add such data sources is to create an API.

Kindly enable Organization Authentication in the Enterprise Gateway which will ease such issues.

  6. To be able to rename an existing connection on On-Premisis Data Gateway

We are creating a naming convention for the data gateway connection. We have a challenge that existing connections are not comply with the naming convention. We are not able to rename them but only to delete existing connection and create new connections. This will cause downtime and also a complex procedure which is easily brings in mistakes.

We wish that we can have the ability to rename the connections on data gateway.

  8. Data Gateway Automated Installation

Support automated installation and registration of Data Gateway(s).

Thus could be via a command-line tool or a Powershell Module, but preferably supported using Powershell DSC resource.

  9. recovery

There should be a way to view the recovery key either on the gateway server or on the cloud service. In business, it is not uncommon for the original installer to move on to greener pastures ("get run over by the beer truck" as we say), taking the location of the recovery key with them. The new responsible party will then need this key.

  10. PowerBI Enterprise Gateway for Linux

Since it seems to depend on .net runtime only (at least more or less), why not port the gateway to linux? There are many customers who want to run linux only backends and are scared of having a windows machine running alongside their holy glory mission critical infrastructure...

  12. List of users

Be possible to extract list of users that are using connections within one Gateway. This will help on Change management process for notification in case the Gateway Server go through any change that requires outage.

  13. Gateway Location tip

A former colleague installed the gateway and forgot write a maintenance guide on his exit. Our IT Team has been unable to find the gateway on our servers.

There should be a tip on the Power BI service, on the settings area of the Gateway, to show which server the gateway exists.

  14. DirectQuery mode for Impala over the Gateway

PowerBi Desktop is working with Impala in SSO/kerberos using Import or DirectQuery mode.

The gateway only accept Import mode for Impala.
Please develop the DirectQuery mode for the Gateway

  15. Option to disable parallel loading or limit data source connections.

Currently the on-premises gateway opens more Oracle connections that we have license for.

  16. Make Data-Gateway refreshes work with Mixed-Sourced Appended tables

I have found that appending tables from mixed sources (as opposed to homogenous sources) breaks the PBI Service's Data-Gateway refresh functionality.

For instance, an appended table pulling from two DB2 tables and an appended table pulling from two Dynamics Odata tables will both refresh just fine when published to Service.
However, if you have an appended table using both DB2 and Dynamics sources, the dataset manager complains,
"You don't have any gateway installed or configured for the data sources in this dataset. Please install a new data gateway, or configure the data source for an existing data gateway."

    The only…

  17. On Premises Data Gateway/Dataset - Email notification when failure improvment

I have just experienced a bad weekend return. All users complaining that their reports/dashboards were not operating anymore.

I quickly discovered that both On Premises Gateways (DEV and PROD) were "down", "Unable to connect: The gateway is either offline or could not be reached".

Microsoft support did not provide a reason, but instead suggested frequent update of the OPG, as well restart of the associated Services on the machines when something is going wrong.

I asked why should we wait for end users to complain, prior taking action, as PowerBI service knows there are some refresh issues, as this is…

  18. gateway multiple domains

Change how the PowerBI service looks at gateways and allow multiple gateways to be shown if the server name matches more than one gateway. Our use case is we have separate domains for DEV and PROD, but our DNS names are the same we do not have to change configuration when moving items in environments. Today the only way to leverage a DEV/QA gateway is to name the Server name different and then we have to match that in the PBIX file. That causes that we have to change out PBIX in each environment thus adding risk to a change…

  19. When adding a datasource to a gateway, allow the 60 second timeout to be changed

When adding a datasource from my on-premise MySQL database, Power Bi will send a query to my Information.Schema table that can take over 60 seconds to query (depending on the database). Since it keeps timing out, I am unable to add the datasource which prevents me from setting up scheduled refresh times. It would be nice to either have the option to change this timeout interval or change the default query Power Bi makes to my database.

  20. Rotate Recovery Key On-Premise Data Gateway

The recovery key on the On-Premise Data Gateway is used to authenticate a On-Premise service to the Power BI service. We have a security requirement that encryption/authentication keys must be periodically changed to prevent outside parties to gain access to our systems/data. While there is a two step authentication needed (you must 1st have authentication into the tenant) and conditional access rules are in place, we still need the ability to change the recovery key without having to re-setup all connections that use the existing gateway.
